A Practical Approach to Legal and Ethical Issues for Physical Therapists

Course Description:

This course will provide physical therapists and physical therapy assistants with a basic understanding of legal and ethical issues relevant to physical therapy practice.

Objectives:
At the completion of this continuing education course the physical therapist will:

1. Identify the types of law that impact physical therapy practice.
2. Differentiate between

a. Federal and State governance,
b. Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of law
c. Civil vs. criminal issues

3. Describe the scope of a state’s authority to govern physical therapy practice through licensure
4. Understand the importance of familiarity with the state practice act
5. Distinguish licensure citations from malpractice issues
6. Acknowledge the usefulness of a personal plan to minimize malpractice
7. Learn the principles of ethical practice
8. Examine online resources for state based practice, federal issues and fraud and abuse

Registration fee: $50.00

Course Approvals:
Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy - approved for 2.0 hours

***ALL PA LICENSED Physical Therapists are required to complete 2 hours of Law and Ethics for this licensing period***

About the Instructor:

Brigette Cuffia, PT, JD

Brigette Cuffia is an Assistant Professor at Neumann University and teaches in the Physical Therapy Program. She is also one of the Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education responsible for student clinical placements. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy and her Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University and her Juris Doctorate Degree from Temple University.

Brigette worked for Moss Rehab Hospital from 1995 through 2010. While at Moss she was
integral in developing a CARF accredited spinal cord injury program, bariatric program and also reviving the sexuality and disability education committee. Brigette was awarded a grant to develop Moss Muscle Builders, a maintenance group for persons with disabilities, which is still active today.

At Nemnann Brigette developed and implements the service-learning curriculum which allows students the opportunity to participate in public health initiatives throughout the community. She
is also currently participating in the Center for Commtmity Leadership Development and
Entrepreneurship at NU. Brigette chairs the Philadelphia Area Clinical Education Consortium a nonprofit group providing continuing education in the region: www.phillyclined.org.
